OLD DEVILS MFC 35/4 2010 SEASON

A high of 30 degrees for our trial match debut on the last Sunday afternoon of March could have set us up for total meltdown rather than total football. But the journey of chasing over 35 glory in a World Cup year had begun.

TALK THE TALK ...

Our first victory was achieved when we successfully appealed for entry into division four of Canterbury association's over 35 competition. We had been placed in division five but a optimistically worded letter compiled from various team emails did the trick when the appeals committee met in early March. They took us at our word that we would storm the comp.

TRIAL BY FIRE

When Hurlstone Park scored on two minutes, we were glad we'd agreed to play 10 minutes short of the regulation 90 minutes for our only trial.

But four quarters of 20 minutes still seemed a long time to keep our younger division two opponents to single figures at a steamy Beaumont Park.

To our surprise, we held out till the first break and did not concede again till close to half way through the second period. Our confidence grew.

Then boom-boom. We scored twice in a few minutes and it was 2-2 at half time.

A scoreless third quarter saw us pushing for the lead.

It was only a controversial handball penalty against us in the final quarter that restored their composure before two late goals boosted their confidence.

Our fitness may have faded late in the game but our hopes for the season ahead did not.

Bring on Round 1.
